That was the name of the city of Dnepropetrovsk at that time. And even the calendar was different then. Arkady Pevzner was born in 1913 according to the old style, at the turn of two eras, when the World War was replaced by the Civil War, where Yekaterinoslav passed now to whites, then to reds, or even to the Makhnovists. _x000D_ As a child, he went through years of devastation and hunger, a time of elation and high hopes. He chose a profession - to defend the Motherland. In 1936 he graduated from the Leningrad Artillery School. He met the Great Patriotic War in 1941 as a battery Commander in the newly formed 200th Infantry Division under the command of Colonel Ivan Lyudnikov. With heavy bloody combats, losing people, breaking out of the encirclement, the Division withdrew for the Dnieper and Desna. _x000D_ By September 10, 450 fighters remained in the Division, and after 10 days, almost all of them heroically fell, blocking the enemy's path. Arkady Pevzner is one of the few who had the fate not only to survive in the fiery summer and autumn of 1941, but also to go through the entire war to the end, until the Victory Day. And after the victorious May, he once again had to engage in combat, already in Manchuria, where the resistance of the almost one million Japanese Kwantung army was broken. _x000D_ For military exploits Arkady Pevzner was awarded high military awards: the Orders of the Patriotic War II degree and the Red Star, medals "For Courage" and "For Military Merit". _x000D_ After the war, he continued to serve in the Armed Forces, commanded an artillery Battalion, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. But the active character, the desire to be useful did not allow me to calm down. _x000D_ A.L. Pevzner found his second vocation in the civil sphere, in the wonderful world of documentary cinema. And he honestly served for more than three decades in the glory of the Central Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of the Documentary Film Studio (TSSDF). Starting as a dispatcher, continuing to work as a director of paintings, he later became the head of one of the two production and creative associations of the Central House of Artists. Filmmakers know that cinema is a collective creation, where the organizing principle is extremely important. Without coordination, administrative support, equipment and a clear work schedule, without taking care of people, the filming process is impossible. _x000D_ This was A.L. Pevzner, taking care of people so that they can focus on shooting without being distracted by household and unnecessary production chores. Kilometers of filmed film, dozens, hundreds of films and stories, diplomas and prizes of festivals and competitions are a worthy result of creative teams, achieved under the skillful leadership of A.L. Pevzner. But he did not forget the army, to which he gave half of his life. _x000D_ For his patronage work, the Minister of Defense of the USSR Marshal Andrei Grechko awarded A.L. Pevzner Certificate of Merit in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces. A.L. Pevzner was born before the Soviet Union and survived it, a state that he faithfully served, which he defended, not sparing his life. He fulfilled his duty as a citizen to the end. _x000D_ And he deserved peace in his second homeland, Israel. _x000D_ Now the TSSDF studio is going through difficult times. But there are people who remember the best years, remember A.L. Pevzner and are grateful for his work, for the years devoted to documentary cinema. Thanks to A.L. Pevzner, three decades of the life of the USSR were captured on film and will forever be preserved in history.
