He did not return from the front. Great-grandfather was a military officer. The officer went through the 1st World War, a campaign in Western Belarus and the Finnish War. He was called to the Great Patriotic War on July 1, 1941 by the Red Army Commissariat of Smolensk. According to my grandmother's recollections, the Director of Prombank, (where he was the Deputy Director) sent him to the front as his replacement. And he had already been 48 years old in 1941. He had the rank of 1st rank Quartermaster Technician (approximately equal to the Captain). He officially went missing in November 1941. However, most likely, it is not entirely true. Or not at all. He was in the 133rd front-line field office of the State Bank of the Western Front. And this is the last thing that is reliably known about him. _x000D_ During the entire war, there was not a single letter from him. And there was nowhere to write. Great-grandmother left Smolensk on July 5th, and on the 16th the Nazis already broke into the city. Great-grandfather had no chance to find out her address in the evacuation in the city of Shadrinsk, Kurgan Region. _x000D_ Through unofficial channels, Sergei Ilyich served as an Accountant at the 365th field cash desk of the State Bank. The 365th field cash office of the State Bank is listed as formed on July 9, 1941 and broken on July 14, 1941. Moreover, both colleagues of the great-grandfather, and the PKG consisted of 3 people: the cashier Vladyko and the cashier Kantorovich had survived the war. Sergei Ilyich no longer appears on the lists of the 133rd FPKG. Perhaps he was transferred to another front (along with his army), but then it is a pure assumption. The only thing that can be asserted quite confidently is that he was not in captivity, since his great-grandmother received a pension for him. That is, somewhere there were documents for him, as for the deceased. Unfortunately, despite the fact that in recent years many archival records have been posted, specialists of the civilian people's commissariats under the Red Army (depot office, banks, etc.) do not get into them. _x000D_ And since the State Bank is a super-closed institution, the data on its employees who passed away in the war are extremely hard to access for research. So, most likely, the data on the great-grandfather is stored in the departmental archive of the field institutions of the State Bank, access to which has a very limited circle of people.
