Pavel Chertenkov

Pavel Chertenkov was born in 1919 in the village of Novo-Terechnoe, Kizlyar District of Ordzhonikidze District. He was drafted into the Red Army in January 1939 by the Kizlyar City Military Commissariat. He served in Lithuania, and in March 1941 he was sent to the front in the 236th Motorized Division, formed in the Transcaucasian Military District. It was later renamed the 236th Rifle Division. The division landed in the port of Feodosia in December 1941 as part of a marine landing force. When reteating from the Crimea in May 1942 the division suffered heavy losses, but gained a rich combat experience. Pavel was a Platoon Leader of the 236th Dnepropetrovsk Rifle Division, a member of the CPSU (b). He died on 29.10.1943.
