In August 1941, he was drafted into the Soviet army, and fought in the infantry on the South-Western front until March 1943 as a squad leader of the 636th rifle regiment of the 36th rifle division. He was injured. Went through the war from private to Lieutenant. In December 1943, he was elected a Komsomol member of the battalion of the 101st guards rifle regiment of the 35th guards rifle division. He fought as part of the 3rd Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts from the Dnieper to the Oder. Participated in the battles for the liberation of Poland and Berlin.
