Rank: Junior Lieutenant. Vasily Andreevich Ivaschenko was born on August 19, 1919 in the village of Laptev-Log, Altai Territory, into a prosperous peasant family. Two days after his birth, his mother suddenly died from an epidemic of typhoid fever. The father still has five children in his arms. In 1940, it was time to be drafted into the active army. He served as a recruit in Novograd-Volynsk, near the city of Rovno in Ukraine, in a motorized rifle regiment. Did not have time to complete military service, the Great Patriotic War began. The cadets were sent to the city of Lutsk. Having not reached the place, they were fired upon by Messerschmitts on the way. The killed and wounded appeared. It was a baptism of fire. On the fourteenth day, near the town of Rozhische, not far from Lutsk, a German bullet interrupted his right arm. In the medical unit they bandaged and sent to Kharkov to the hospital. The major arrived shortly before his recovery. It was necessary to select eight more literate people to send officers to the school. They took him too. After a year of study, Vasily Andreevich, with the rank of junior lieutenant, arrived at the front at the disposal of Captain Savchuk, twice a hero of the Soviet Union, and walked with him all the roads of the war to the end. On the same day he received command of a platoon of mortars and the order "Cross the river, cross, gain a foothold, and drive out the Nazis from the Sandomierz bridgehead." They fought a fierce battle. The commander of the artillery battery was killed in this battle. Vasily Andreevich takes over command of the battery. The battle lasted all night, by morning the enemy was driven out of the city of Sandomierz. The divisional commander awarded Vasily Andreyevich the Order of the Red Star for his courage. And part of them immediately entered a new, no less fierce battle. And again for his courage and courage in the evening the same commander presented him with the second Order of the Red Star. What does not happen in war, even in one day the reward finds a hero twice. There were many cities and villages on his way, for which he heroically fought. Despite the fact that Vasily Andreevich did not like to remember the events of those days and I understand that for the peaceful sky over my head I owe just such heroes as my grandfather.
