He was drafted by the Tobolsk Military Comissariat of the Omsk region. First, he was at a training center in the city of Kuibyshev, and at the end of 1943 he went to the Baltic Front. He received the rank of a Sergeant. _x000D_ He was killed 03/11/1944 in combat during the assault on height 173.1. in the village of Gora, Sebezhsky district, Pskov region at the age of 19. _x000D_ We had taken this height twice. There are still many remains of our soldiers on the plowed field. And on the hill itself, where the Germans were sitting, there is an underground passage dug by the Germans to send reinforcements to the height during the assault. _x000D_ During the combat, when our forces knocked the Germans out of their positions, German reinforcements had secretly arrived at the height along this underground passage and dropped our shock groups from there. The remains of this passage, coming from a nearby height, can be seen today. The walls of this passage, fortified with boards, have been preserved. Its length is about 300 meters. Alexander Grigorievich was nominated for the II degree Order of the Patriotic War (posthumously). Here is an excerpt from the award list: “... Junior Sergeant Popov Alexander Grigorievich in the combat near the village of Gora for the height of 173.1 showed fearlessness and courage. While repelling the enemy's counterattack under heavy artillery mortar fire, regardless of the danger to life, with accurate heavy machine gun fire, they cut off the enemy infantry from the tanks and shot the brutalized Nazis point-blank, thanks to which the counterattack was repulsed with large losses for the enemy. _x000D_ In this unequalcombat, Junior Sergeant Popov A.G. was mortally wounded and died on the combatfield behind his heavy machine gun." Signed by the Commander of 421st Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mozakovsky. Popov A.G. was buried in the Pskov region, Sebezhsky district, in the center of the village of Chaika.
