The faces of WWII Heroes

Pavlov Ivan Nikolaevich was born in February 6, 1921 in Kuchmozero village. The military rank is Sergeant. He was drafted into the army on October 7, 1940. He returned home in July 1946. Ivan Nikolayevich did his military service on Kildin Island in the Barents Sea. After the declaration of war on the official radio, he was enlisted in 329th Infantry Regiment of 114th Division. _x000D_ The Battalion Commander was Armenian Harutyunyan. _x000D_ “On July 13, 1941, we were heavily bombed at sea,” recalls Ivan Nikolaevich. - Two of our Battalions landed behind enemy lines. The road, along which the enemy vehicles were moving, went deep into our rear. Our combat mission was to cut it off in the town of Zapadnaya Litsa. The disembarkation of our Battalions was accompanied by 2 destroyers, 1 submarine, and a patrol boat. From the air we were supported by 3 fighters, 12 enemy bombers opposed them. We sailed on a transport ship. Under heavy enemy fire, we landed. We have not yet accepted a real combat, but have already lost many of our comrades. Of the two Battalions, only 2 platoons remained. Only on the third day we were able to approach the required height. We had to take the height. The place was open. 3 Messerschmidts were circling above us all the time. There was a small lake and a stream flowing, they wanted to cross the stream, but the enemy began to crossfire. _x000D_ I was the first number of a light machine gun. The combat was fierce. From many hours of continuous combat, the barrel of the machine gun glowed red-hot. Platoon Commander Antonenko was shooting back next to me. He also took part in the Finnish War. He was hurt hard, in the throat. This fight was my first baptism of fire. " _x000D_ Ivan Nikolaevich fought on the Karelian Front, then, as part of 2nd Belorussian Front, he liberated the Polish cities of Gdynia and Gdansk. In Poland he was wounded and he had already met the Victory in the hospital. And his guards unit ended the war in Berlin. I.N. Pavlov was awarded the sign "Veteran of the Karelian Front". Military merits of the war veteran were awarded with the orders of the Patriotic War II degree (No. 770805), the Red Star (No. 498279), the Red Star (2187358), medals "For Victory Over Germany", "For Liberation of the Soviet Arctic." Ivan Nikolaevich was also presented with thanks for his military work. _x000D_ Demobilized from the Red Army, he returned to his native village of Kuchmozero. He worked in agriculture, started a family. With his wife, Anna Mikhailovna, they raised 5 children and gave them an education. Ivan Nikolaevich passed away after a serious illness in March 1988.

DATE OF BIRTH: 01/05/1914 _x000D_ DATE OF DEATH: 01/29/2015 _x000D_ Title: Lieutenant Colonel _x000D_ Branch of troops: Artillery_x000D_ Division: 200th Infantry Division (1st Formation). _x000D_ _x000D_ He was born in 1914 in Yekaterinoslav. That was the name of the city of Dnepropetrovsk at that time. And even the calendar was different then. Arkady Pevzner was born in 1913 according to the old style, at the turn of two eras, when the World War was replaced by the Civil War, where Yekaterinoslav passed now to whites, then to reds, or even to the Makhnovists. _x000D_ As a child, he went through years of devastation and hunger, a time of elation and high hopes. He chose a profession - to defend the Motherland. In 1936 he graduated from the Leningrad Artillery School. He met the Great Patriotic War in 1941 as a battery Commander in the newly formed 200th Infantry Division under the command of Colonel Ivan Lyudnikov. With heavy bloody combats, losing people, breaking out of the encirclement, the Division withdrew for the Dnieper and Desna. _x000D_ By September 10, 450 fighters remained in the Division, and after 10 days, almost all of them heroically fell, blocking the enemy's path. Arkady Pevzner is one of the few who had the fate not only to survive in the fiery summer and autumn of 1941, but also to go through the entire war to the end, until the Victory Day. And after the victorious May, he once again had to engage in combat, already in Manchuria, where the resistance of the almost one million Japanese Kwantung army was broken. _x000D_ For military exploits Arkady Pevzner was awarded high military awards: the Orders of the Patriotic War II degree and the Red Star, medals "For Courage" and "For Military Merit". _x000D_ After the war, he continued to serve in the Armed Forces, commanded an artillery Battalion, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. But the active character, the desire to be useful did not allow me to calm down. _x000D_ A.L. Pevzner found his second vocation in the civil sphere, in the wonderful world of documentary cinema. And he honestly served for more than three decades in the glory of the Central Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of the Documentary Film Studio (TSSDF). Starting as a dispatcher, continuing to work as a director of paintings, he later became the head of one of the two production and creative associations of the Central House of Artists. Filmmakers know that cinema is a collective creation, where the organizing principle is extremely important. Without coordination, administrative support, equipment and a clear work schedule, without taking care of people, the filming process is impossible. _x000D_ This was A.L. Pevzner, taking care of people so that they can focus on shooting without being distracted by household and unnecessary production chores. Kilometers of filmed film, dozens, hundreds of films and stories, diplomas and prizes of festivals and competitions are a worthy result of creative teams, achieved under the skillful leadership of A.L. Pevzner. But he did not forget the army, to which he gave half of his life. _x000D_ For his patronage work, the Minister of Defense of the USSR Marshal Andrei Grechko awarded A.L. Pevzner Certificate of Merit in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces. A.L. Pevzner was born before the Soviet Union and survived it, a state that he faithfully served, which he defended, not sparing his life. He fulfilled his duty as a citizen to the end. _x000D_ And he deserved peace in his second homeland, Israel. _x000D_ Now the TSSDF studio is going through difficult times. But there are people who remember the best years, remember A.L. Pevzner and are grateful for his work, for the years devoted to documentary cinema. Thanks to A.L. Pevzner, three decades of the life of the USSR were captured on film and will forever be preserved in history.

Personally, being at the forefront of our infantry, not paying attention to strong fire, showed courage and valor, discovered and spotted many enemy firing points. Moving forward into the front lines with a radio, he transmitted coordinates for the destruction of firing points, as a result of which our infantry moved forward with almost no losses. In January 1944, in a combat near the village of Vishar, he learned from the infantrymen that a group of German machine gunners was entering the Battalion on the right. Lieutenant Popov, having attached his reconnaissance to the infantry squad, with this handful of brave men struck the flank of the German group and scattered it with rifle and machine-gun fire. "

Branch of troops: Aviation. _x000D_ _x000D_ Vasily Efimovich Petrushchenko was born in Ukraine in the village of Girino, Sumy region, Yampolsky district. He was drafted into the army in 1941 and sent to the Kazakhstan Flight School, from where he was urgently transferred to Stalingrad in the thick of war. In the combat for Stalingrad, he was wounded in the leg and sent to the hospital. By an incredible and terrible coincidence, as it turned out later, his father was killed in the same combat. _x000D_ After the hospital, Vasily Yefimovich was sent to the Normandie-Niemen Regiment as an aircraft mechanic. The Normandie Squadron, then the Normandie-Niemen Regiment, was a French national formation that fought on the side of the USSR. Until August 1943, the aircraft of 1st air squadron were serviced by Soviet technicians, including Vasily Efimovich. The French pilots fought honestly, displaying heroism with enthusiasm. Upon returning to the airfield, they enthusiastically showed the technicians the settlements on the map liberated by the Soviet troops, as if their cities and villages were being liberated. The result of the Regiment's combat activities for the first company in 1943 was as follows: 77 enemy aircraft were shot down, 18 aircraft were damaged. _x000D_ The engineering service of the unit was able to fully ensure the combat work of the Regiment in full combat readiness. For this, technicians had to constantly work without sleep and rest, repairing and restoring aircraft damaged incombat, eliminating defects that appeared, carrying out routine maintenance and preparing aircraft for air combat. _x000D_ On May 26, 1944, the Regiment was relocated to 3rd Belorussian Front, where it actively participated in the hostilities to liberate the cities of Vitebsk, Borisov, Minsk, Vilnius and many other settlements. In August 1944, the Regiment was re-equipped with the latest high-speed fighters Yak-3. This circumstance helped the French pilots to distinguish themselves in the first East Prussian operation. On just one day on 10/15/1944, the pilots shot down 29 enemy aircraft without suffering their own losses. _x000D_ The result of the Regiment's combat work in 1944 was 122 shot down enemy aircraft. Such high results were achieved thanks to the acquisition of combat experience by the pilots, their transition to group combat tactics, the high quality of Soviet weapons, Yak 3, and the selfless labor of the Regiment's technical personnel. The constant readiness for combat of aircraft is a matter of honor for Soviet technicians, each aircraft was worth its weight in gold! During the 4 years of the war, the technical personnel of the Regiment served 11,942 flights, of which 5,240 were combat ones. _x000D_ The technicians, seeing off the pilots into combat, tried to ensure the best for them in maitenance. They tried to maintain a fighting spirit and good mood, which was a guarantee of future victories. Vasily Efimovich went through the entire war and returned home. _x000D_ Petrushchenko V.E. was awarded: the Order of the Military Cross, French awards, 2 medals "For Military Merit", Medal "For Capture of Konigsberg", Medal "For Victory over Germany"._x000D_ In May 1980, Vasily Efimovich traveled to Moscow to meet the veterans of the Normandie-Niemen air Regiment. Nikolai's friend wrote about this in a letter to relatives in Moscow, where Nikolai's uncle, Pyotr Andreyevich Potapov, and his cousins, Zinaida and Valentina, lived. At home, they did not know that the son and brother had passed away and until the very end they hoped that he would return from the war. _x000D_ On a sunny July day in 1947, his mother Maria Ivanovna came home sad and announced to her 13-year-old daughter Vera: "Nicholai was killed." _x000D_ In her hands she was holding a death notification. Later, relatives who had received a letter from a friend of Nikolai admitted that they did not tell Maria Ivanovna about the death of her son on purpose. _x000D_ Until the end of their days, the mother and wife kept and cherished the memory of the son and husband who did not return from the war. Many years after the Victory over the Nazis, I received a letter from pioneer pathfinders, who reported that her son Nikolai Ivanovich Potapov was buried in a mass grave in Hungary in the city of Bicske and invited me to come to the grave. Maria Ivanovna refused to travel. I later explained her refusal by the fact that she was not ready to go through the loss of her son. _x000D_ The name of Nikolai Ivanovich Potapov is immortalized on a memorial, where rallies are held annually on the Victory Day, and where relatives and friends come to bow to the dead soldiers-fellow villagers.

Rank: Corporal_x000D_ Branch of troops: Armored and Mechanized troops. _x000D_ My great-grandfather, Innokenty Khrisanfovich Pisarev, from 1941 to 1946 had served in the tank forces in the Far East and was a participant in the Manchurian operation. It is hard to say what time was more hard for the Far Eastern outskirts of Russia either a pre-war protracted conflict, four years of a formal truce or the final month of hostilities in World War II. _x000D_ He had never talked about what happened there on the Japanese front, at that time everyone was proud of the heroes who defeated Germany. The soldiers who defended the Soviet frontiers from saboteurs built defensive structures, lived in trenches for years without uniforms, weapons, food, medicine ... People rotted alive in humid climate and mud. After all, "everything for the front, everything For Victory" was sent to the Western Front ... _x000D_ My grandfather finished the war with the rank of corporal, a Studebaker truck driver. He was awarded the medal "For Victory over Japan". Since the war, his wife and two children ("pre-war", as the great-grandmother said) were waiting for him in the village of Tsagakshino, Chita Region. Grandmother, Buzina Evdokia Petrovna, during the war worked at a school, taught local and evacuated children, for which she was awarded the title of "Veteran of the Home Front". _x000D_ And the great-grandfather fell in love with the East for the rest of his life, and two "post-war" children (Tatyana and Anatoly) were born to them in the Amur Region (the settlements Mazanovo and Beloyarovo). _x000D_ In 1957, the family moved to the villageVerkh-Usugli, they built a house. My grandfather worked as a driver at the Studebaker, drove miners, my grandmother was a Head of a kindergarten. Our Innokenty Khrisanfovich passed away after a second heart attack at the age of 49. Great-grandmother outlived her husband by 34 years, (she passed away in 2001). She fulfilled her husband's desire, she went to live in the Amur Region (Svobodny town).

Title: Senior Lieutenant_x000D_ Branch of troops: Armored and Mechanized troops_x000D_ Alexander Popov was a part of the heroic and terrible combat at the Kursk Bulge. He graduated from the Ulyanovsk Ordzhonikidze Military School. In 1942 he was sent as a Junior Lieutenant to the Kostenevsky tank camp near Moscow and was appointed Commander of a command platoon. Their 64th Tank Regiment was sent to the Leningrad Front, to the Staraya Russa Region, where the Regiment joined the 3rd Mechanized Corps, commanded by General Katukov at the time when the Nazis besieged Leningrad. _x000D_ According to my grandfather, the enemy covered them with artillery fire, bombed them from the air. It was hard for the tankers. Swamps and forests are everywhere. In January 1943 they broke through the siege of Leningrad. _x000D_ After the combat of Stalingrad, Popov A.A. was transferred to the 3rd Guards Stalingrad Mechanized Corps as Platoon Commander. They were stationed in the town of Oboyan, which is near Belgorod. Here the enemy inflicted a powerful tank strike with seven hundred tanks of selected tank divisions. On 5 June, a fierce tank combat broke out. The Nazis launched an offensive at dawn. Hundreds, hundreds of new heavy "tigers", "panthers", self-propelled guns "Ferdinand" were thrown against the Soviet troops. Our medium tanks against these colossus, dying in flames without hesitation, without a doubt in their hearts, rammed these colossus. In that combat, our artillery ground the enemy with “Katyusha”. But the Nazis concentrated huge forces there, the battlefield was covered with smoke of conflagrations. _x000D_ My grandfather was part of the most fierce combat near Prokhorovka of the same the 3rd Stalingrad Mechanized Corps. 1200 tanks fought on both sides. They knocked out and rammed each other, converged "armor on armor". Many kilometers were burning with the stench of burnt human flesh. The enemy did not pass, German wermacht had lost the combat on the Kursk Bulge. _x000D_ In that combat on the Kursk Bulge, the corps was left practically without tanks. In this combat, Alexander Afanasyevich earned the Order of the Patriotic War of 1st degree. The second Order was for capture of the city Belgorod, when his corps captured 22 German "tigers" and turned them against the Nazis. Having received reinforcements from the rear: the columns "Stalingrad kolkhoznik" and "Azerbaijani kolkhoznik", set off further, clearing Gadyach, Akhtyrka, Zolotonosha. Having reached the river Dnieper, Alexander Aanasyevich, in the first boat crossed the river and laid a connection to coordinate the fire. A mention of this military action is described in the book "From the Volga to the Baltic" by A.M. Samsonov. _x000D_ The boat was covered by the enemy’s fire at the very shore. Division Commander, watching the forcing through binoculars, saw human body parts flying after the explosion. Нe nominated Alexander Popov for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. But suddenly the connection was restored, and, after all, the grandfather remained alive. Somehow in the fire of war his military action was forgotten, but my grandfather did not fight for the title after all. In the ranks of this Guards Mechanized Corps, Alexander Afanasyevich walked along many military roads and ended the war in China with three orders of the Patriotic War, the Order of the Red Star, numerous medals and posthumously not awarded title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
