"Battles for Height 220 In the second half of July 22nd, the 1st and 3rd Battalions launched an attack on Height 220 and a grove located 1 km north of Visloe village. The enemy responded with intense artillery and mortar fire directed at the advancing units of our regiment, but could not halt the advance. Our troops quickly advanced, disrupting the enemy's ability to aim accurately. The enemy’s security detachments were pushed back. The 1st Battalion reached the southern edge of the grove west of Shoshenkovo village, while the 2nd Battalion advanced to a position 1 km south of Shoshenkovo. Enemy fire intensified. Both battalions consolidated their positions. Everything fell silent. Suspicious quietness! Enhanced observation was maintained on the enemy, and rightly so. The enemy counterattacked with four Tiger tanks at the junction between the two battalions. Our artillery and mortars engaged immediately. Machine gunners and riflemen opened heavy fire. One Tiger tank stopped dead in its tracks. The remaining Tigers and accompanying infantry retreated. The counterattack was repulsed! The enemy left about fifty soldiers and officers killed on the battlefield, plus one damaged Tiger tank. During these battles, the commander of the 1st Battalion, decorated captain Chernykh Yegor Stepanovich, and the commander of the battery of 76-mm cannons, lieutenant Mironov Ivan Stepanovich, perished. Distinguished courage and bravery were displayed by sappers of the regiment who cleared enemy minefields: platoon commander lieutenant Rukavishnikov, sergeant Gorinin, privates Busygin, Egorychev, Rozhkov, and Kiryshev. Despite fierce resistance from the enemy, the regiment continued attacks in the same direction and approached within 150-200 meters of German trenches, where it entrenched itself under heavy small arms, machine gun, and mortar fire."
